Permits, Crew Papers and Fitness in One Place

A bus carries people, so the paperwork is heavier than for freight. Permits set out what a vehicle may do and where. Stage carriage and contract carriage are different things in law. Running one on the other's permit is one of the quickest ways to lose it. On top of that sit fitness, insurance, passenger insurance, PUC and driver licensing. Many permits also carry conditions about the tracking device fitted to the bus.

A stage carriage runs a fixed route picking up fare paying passengers. A contract carriage is hired as a whole and should not pick up along the way. Each vehicle's permit type, validity and conditions are stored against it. The difference is visible before a vehicle is allocated.

Operators running intercity or tourist work across state lines usually hold an All India Tourist Permit instead of separate state permits. Permit numbers and expiry dates sit with the vehicle record.
